Briana Akani

Academic Advisor

What do you like about advising?
I really enjoy getting the chance to talk to students and help them figure out how to turn their dreams and interests into reality! Everyone's path through life is different, and it's awesome that, as an advisor, I get to be a part of helping a student decide just what their path should look like.

What was your major in college, and why?
I majored in Psychology and minored in Community Action & Social Change as well as Afroamerican & African Studies. My interest in social sciences and the human experience began in high school when I took a sociology class, which led me to taking psychology and AP psych. I wanted to continue exploring all of the nuances in human life, and how differences in individuals served to build up communities and societies, especially when we look at social, cultural, racial, and ethnic differences. Basically, I was really interested in learning about people and how they impact society and vice versa!

What is your best piece of advice for first year students?
Take the time out to explore and try new things; get out of your comfort zone! College is a wonderful opportunity to explore avenues and interests that you haven't yet had the chance to get into, and it can be a wonderfully fulfilling experience to get a chance to start doing something that you love! Join a new club, take a random elective, and make new friends. All of these things help you develop as a student, a budding professional, and as a person in general.

What do you spend time on outside of your work?
Outside of work, I spend much of my time relaxing. I like to read, hang out with friends, explore new restaurants, travel, and catch up on reality competition shows!
