What do you like about advising?
Everyone has different values that drive them, and having the ability to make a positive impact on lives is one of mine. My goal as an academic advisor is to ensure that students have the resources that they need to be successful during their academic journey, but also afterward as well. This includes their success inside the classroom and also outside of it, gaining meaningful experiences and building strong relationships. I enjoy helping students feel empowered to make their own knowledgeable decisions for themselves. Helping students feel ready and confident to face the challenges that they may face ahead of them in college and in life overall is very fulfilling.
What do you like about working with engineering students?
Engineering students are driven to solve problems that have an impact on people’s live. Not only are they driven but they are very creative thinkers, which is exciting as there is not always just one way to come up with a solution!
What was your major in college, and why?
My Bachelor's degree is in Public Relations, and I also have a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership - Higher Education Student Affairs (both from Eastern Michigan University). Even though you may not think a degree in PR would directly impact my current line of work, I actually use the skills from both of my degrees on a daily basis! Being able to effectively communicate is a skill that is transferable no matter what direction you go in, and I get to use the skills from both of my degrees each day to connect with students and help support them through their educational journeys!
What is your best piece of advice for first-year students?
It’s okay if you don’t have things figured out right away! College is a time to explore and learn more about things that you may not have had the chance to thus far. Not only will you learn a lot in the classroom, but also outside of it as well. Your first year is an opportune time to really reflect on your skills, interests, and values, and develop your future goals. Also, don’t be afraid to ask for help! There are many people here on campus who want to see you succeed and are happy to help you get there!
What is the best kept secret at the University of Michigan?
Burton Memorial Tower, built in 1936 and located on Central Campus on the Ingalls Mall, was designed by world-renowned architect Albert Kahn and houses the Charles Baird Carillon (which is the third heaviest in the world). Thirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session, and guests are welcome to go inside to watch! The Lurie Tower located on North Campus and built in 1996, also has a Carillon and thirty-minute recitals are performed at 1:30 p.m. every weekday that classes are in session. Either is a great way to take a quick break away from class to take your mind off of things!
What do you spend time on outside of your work?
Most of my days involve spending time with my wife Courtney and our two cats (Winnie and Althea). I enjoy spending time with my family, watching/attending sporting events (especially Detroit sports), and exploring new places when I get a chance. I also enjoy visiting theme parks and riding roller coasters!
